Boggles my mind to read about people spending hundreds on game prototypes. Chipboard, glue and print-outs are so cheap! If I playtest a game and it comes out as some fancy produced prototype I'm immediately wary - the designer might not take feedback well.

Absolutely, it indicates an unhealthy level of trust that might shield any feedback. They're betting big.
