I haven't played Magic: The Gathering for over 10 years. From time to time I check how it has evolved and it never fails to impress.

I haven't played in 20, but this newest weird expansion Unstable looks bananas. I would love to get a couple of "starter sets" and try it out. I don't know if it's that type of expansion though.

I was never active when those "weird" expansions were out but I got the feeling that, at the time, they were just distributed as boosters.

Yeah, "Unstable" looks like something else entirely. Maybe it fits with existing Magic canon, maybe not? Have you seen it? Comes out next month, I think.

I saw some of the posts they wrote about it, mostly from players who also haven't played in a while. Lots of cool ideas, and squirrels!

I did look to see if there were starter decks. Nope. This game has changed so much in 20 years. I used to buy Antiquities boosters and could still trade for Beta cards and Alphas to a lesser degree. Impressive how they've innovated and stayed fresh.

Got out around Ice Age. But I was in deep, read the novels, etc. I loved it. Never had a dedicated play group though. Still, I'd love to revisit it.

You left before I started playing! I started with Nemesis and played up to Darksteel. For four sweet years I studied along a group that was just as casual as me, and it was wonderful! I've never been able to capture such a community again.

That sounds awesome! It's hard to find folks who can just enjoy the fun without min/maxing and building whatever the hottest deck is. I'd just goof around and build a Goblin Deck or Orc Deck or try and build something around a card like the Shivan Dragon. :)

Exactly! I had the most fun when the group had a similar "ambition". Since then we scattered to other countries but I still regularly pick up other games hoping they'll fill that gap.
