Okay, so several old CCGs have tried this. Is the mechanism fundamentally flawed? You are losing HP *and* opportunities to come back. Hm.

Perhaps trigger effects similar to Netrunner's Ice or Kaijudo's Shield Blasts:
If damaged, draw instead.

@DanielSolis "Deck as life" has major psychological drawbacks for casual players. From a pure functionality POV, it's fine however.2 replies 0 retweets 1 like -

@eric_lang There's also the difference between discarding face-up or face-down. Does it feel worse to know what you're losing?3 replies 0 retweets 0 likes -

@DanielSolis Knowing what you're losing is anti-casual. But discarding face down is hacky. There is no obvious elegant solution.3 replies 0 retweets 1 like -

@eric_lang sounds like it may just not be an appropriate mechanism for a casual game, which may explain its prevalence in so many CCGs.3 replies 0 retweets 0 likes -

@DanielSolis@eric_lang What if rather than discarding, you placed cards face up, which could combo or collect for later game usage?1 reply 0 retweets 0 likes -

@Trollitc@eric_lang I feel like that path leads to Kaijudo's shield mechanism. (To some extent, Ice in Netrunner.)2 replies 0 retweets 1 like -

@DanielSolis@Trollitc All these proposed alternatives are mechanical gymnastics. What problem are you trying to solve? If none, use a die.2 replies 0 retweets 1 like -

@eric_lang I just get an occasional fanciful urge to take CCG paradigms, like "life," and shift them to some other theme/mechanics.2 replies 0 retweets 0 likes
@DanielSolis @eric_lang I really like how Star Wars LCG does it. Empire has a turn limit, Rebels have to stop their plans beforehand. No HP.
