The illustration for Hand of Fate is a collaboration between @glad_lad and I. Original CO2 cover by Paula Simonetti and Giacomo Tappainer.

And this is just the stuff I had a 3d file handy for, there's a bunch more, including these two illustrations (Trick of the Rails and Railways of Portugal), which are some of my favourites.pic.twitter.com/XxTHfjZCLd

I'd love to see your take on the art an 18xx game

Me too, but the hardcore players get angry when they look nice.

Nobody gets angry because a game looks nice. People just don’t want looks to take priority over usability as is the case with Carthagian’s remake. I also think the idea that the 18xx style is ugly is very debatable. I enjoy the style when done well and find it very pleasing

I've found it very challenging to convince people to play until I showed them Carthaginian's remake. They wouldn't even consider it. So if it gets people to try and discover they like the genre, despite its flaws, I'd consider that a big win.

Last time I played with that remake, people couldn't tell apart yellow from green. And everyone had to get close to read shares and other basic information. That's not a fair trade for appealing to people who prioritize looks.

I didn't get to play a full game of it so I can't compare, and those sound very valid complaints. I think we agree that it would be possible to make an 18XX game that looks more appealing to newcomers than most currently do.

I think most newer releases like 18Chesapeake look quite nice. Perhaps not spectacular but I don't think they are hard to look at. Usability is important because I find new players struggle to visualize routes. I often see them pick up the wrong tiles.

I'd say it looks ok, better than most I've seen but not very appealing (to me!). I appreciate that the colors aren't too saturated. Ian's biggest strength is usability, so I'd love to see his take on it.
