I'm watching @MarkusButticus and @AjoeyVengeant play a game and mark equipped a shirt that gave +1percent damage resistance
and it got me thinking about upgrades in games like this that feel inconsequential and thus useless unless stacked

also not a fan of this type of stat system because if I want to play optimally I gotta wear clothing that looks crap but has good stats

I'm with you! I have arguments like this all the time at studios. At its core the answer is simple. One takes a long time to make/test and the other does not. As for the looks, a lot of games now allow you to have the stats of one equipment with the visuals of another.

Precisely. A few are specifically designed, the others are generated by some randomization of stats/elements. Usually those marginal stat boosts take me out of the game and make me reconsider if I want to keep going (often not).

I really like John Romero's take on this: https://www.theguardian.com/games/2019/nov/12/doom-creator-john-romero-shooter-games-id-software …pic.twitter.com/kSudOeYYfl
