The game itself is a race. Once you've selected which cute animals you'll be playing with in each game, you'll do deck building things: playing cards from your hand for their cool abilities, or using them to buy newer and more powerful cards from the central market.pic.twitter.com/IeMu6utAG4
Anyone familiar with deck building games knows that you have to get a good combo going in order to get the most points and win. ...and this is where DoM inverts the whole formula. You win by building 8 stalls, and to build a stall requires you to tear apart your deck.pic.twitter.com/4qC4lOiCOH
This genius stroke solves so many issues that I have with the genre in one go. - no more point counting at the end - no more 'wait, who's winning?' - no more runaway winners - no more 'my engine is working! wait, game over?!'pic.twitter.com/I18zZvvKAh
Because you can only build 1 stall per turn, you have to start taking apart your deck's engine early enough to not get left behind but you also need to have the right cards IN the deck to be able to build stalls to begin with, since each stall's value must go from 1 to 8.pic.twitter.com/V4yIt5APmO
and because the game ends INSTANTLY once a player has their 8th stall, there's serious pressure to keep up, but the game is paced such that going ahead too fast will leave you without gas in the tank and you'll end up losing to someone who took it slow and steady.pic.twitter.com/cYSOx09Svb
combine this with all of the different decks with all their different abilities (which you can include or leave out depending on the experience you prefer) and you have a really dynamic game. Hate direct attacks? Leave them out! Like combo-tastic games? Keep those in!pic.twitter.com/2ohGC3V048
anyone who's a fan of deck building as a genre should try Dale of Merchants, and for me it's cute, gentle theme, incredible variety, and intelligent approach to fixing most of my issues with the genre means every deck builder has to compete against how good DoM is.pic.twitter.com/bV8gPp6dat
I'm a big fan of deckbuilders and this sounds great! Already liked the entombing mechanic of Valley of the Kings and this seems to evolve it, plus the modular nature is very promising.
As far as I'm concerned, that culling=scoring mechanism needs to be baked into every deck builder.
Designing the game with goals to complete also works well as an alternative to scoring.
