How do you feel about them, now that you know?

Well, I'm obviously conscious of its history now. However, I don't think that the fact that such a hideous group of people use it to spread hatred should deter others from using those emotes in ways that have nothing to do with that. If that makes sense.

I get the intention but when a minority and you're dealing with people you don't know, wouldn't it push you away? The swastika was originally an ancient religious symbol, but its meaning has been irreversibly tainted since.

To be honest, if I'm in a chat room and there are Pepe emotes available, I wouldn't think twice about using them, even now after learning about their dark history. I just don't associate them with those ideas, to me they're just emotes like any other.

Now, if someone would express discomfort when I used such emotes in any context, I obviously wouldn't mind stopping using them.

That's the thing. It's not about how you think. If you want to foster a welcoming community, these things will push people out.

I understand that now, but I've never seen someone consider a community unwelcoming just because they use pepe emotes. On the contrary, I've joined a lot of welcoming communities where they use those emotes just like any other. This issue was never brought up.

that may well be because we just leave without engaging. It's a new community, i have no interest in changing it as i have no attachment yet - so i see the pepes and leave the stream/channel/server/whatever

i've never once announced "i'm leaving because of the pepe emotes", i just close it and don't come back

I completely understand that, and I'd probably also react the same way if I was in your place. With that said, the reality is that, in doing so, people will never learn about things until much later on.

That's what I hope to show with this poll. I'm glad to see you are willing to listen.
