You've joined a discord server and start noticing some people are using pepe the frog emojis. How many of those does it take until you feel this is not a safe place?

original creator of pepe did not want pepe to be considered a racist icon, so i do not feel unsafe seeing the frog on its own, i look for people using him inappropriately. i'm really sad for the original creator having his art associated with assholes :(

I feel bad for him, he didn't deserve this and is not to blame but at this point it's out of his hands, unfortunately.

Should we let it be out of his hands? Should we let it be out of our hands? Why are we allowing racists to decide pop culture for us?

It's too tainted to be reclaimed without potentially making a lot of vulnerable people very uncomfortable so it's not worth it, in my opinion.

I'm aware that a common fascist strategy is to coopt popular imagery in order to "claim" it and thus "claim" anyone using it as part of their group, thus artifically making themselves look more popular than they really are.

I also feel its totally valid for someone to feel uncomfortable by the presence of that meme (I know if I joined a discord server and everyone was using that meme constantly, I'd be a little suspicious.

However, I don't believe the best response to that strategy is to simply let them do it, to let fascists decide what imagery we should and shouldn't use.

I don't like it either but if I was in charge of a community and I wanted it to be welcoming and diverse, I'd have to do something about this, because letting it slide will just signal to bigots that it is a safe place and will push others out.
