You've joined a discord server and start noticing some people are using pepe the frog emojis. How many of those does it take until you feel this is not a safe place?

original creator of pepe did not want pepe to be considered a racist icon, so i do not feel unsafe seeing the frog on its own, i look for people using him inappropriately. i'm really sad for the original creator having his art associated with assholes :(

I feel bad for him, he didn't deserve this and is not to blame but at this point it's out of his hands, unfortunately.

Should we let it be out of his hands? Should we let it be out of our hands? Why are we allowing racists to decide pop culture for us?

that's kinda how i feel, this is an artists artwork, which means they should have say so in its usage as a racist symbol. if a disney character was used like this you know damn sure disney would sue them into dust...

In theory I agree, but I don't believe he could reach enough people to change the public opinion. It's a bit like when the creator of the GIF said that it was pronounced "jif" and the world shrugged and continued saying it like they always had.
