You've joined a discord server and start noticing some people are using pepe the frog emojis. How many of those does it take until you feel this is not a safe place?

My thoughts on him has changed over time. I had only known of the meme through it's use in far-right in the States. However, I've seen it used in discords I'm in and various places that definitely are not that.

When I asked about the history, they didn't know it, and the response was, "why do they get to take control of that symbol? It wasn't created for that purpose" same thing for the ok hand. Why do they just get to try and take something from culture and try and make it theirs?

So I guess I see that perspective. But if it's something bigger like say the swastika like you said, there's a point at which that turns. I don't think it's a black and white thing I guess.

At this point, it feels similar in tone to wearing a MAGA hat "ironically".

uh, I don't think so. MAGA was made specifically for something. Pepe was kinda co-opted. So it makes sense that if you don't follow US media or certain far-right groups in the States you'd have no idea.

Twitch chat for popular games is a constant stream of "pepeLaugh" and "KEK". 100% fair to be offput by terms co-opted by the alt-right but I wouldn't assume any political awareness/intent by the majority of the people who use it in gaming contexts.

That's part of the problem. It's associated with so much trauma that it's not worth trying to suss out what random users mean by it, and it pushes people away.

For sure, if I were building a community allowing possibly-ok pepes is not a hill worth dying on. Just ban them and embrace the anime chibis, no one needs pepe to express themselves.

Co-opting stuff is all about trying to weasel people into pointless hills to die on. That's the meta game. It's trivial to agree that direct racist slurs have no place, it's much harder when its... celtic symbolism, Hawaiian shirts, cartoon frogs, kek (from wow), ok symbols etc.
