You've joined a discord server and start noticing some people are using pepe the frog emojis. How many of those does it take until you feel this is not a safe place?

depends if the people using are alt-right or not. pepe was a meme before 4chan alt-right infiltrates turned it into a hate symbol. it's up to discord admin to set their own limits but shall we ban everything a random hate group once popularized instead of taking back the meaning?

also, do recommend watching the "Feels Good Man" documentary. sad story but important view to know how alt-right infiltrates and weaponizes communities into doing this kind of shit, stuff that makes us not be able to have nice things.

I'm well aware of the story, I knew the original comic before this all went down. To answer your question. Yes, I think if you want to foster a welcoming community you need to remove the things that make toxic people feel welcome.

i'm divided in that. i can agree a safe space is important and with admin role you need to ensure it follows your values, no hate speech allowed. on the other hand anyone can turn something into a hate symbol and i wouldn't want to stop using it for it's original purpose.

In theory I agree, but for those without the context (hence the setting of the question) it's registers as a hate symbol, even if you were using it "as a joke". So I don't think it's worth using.
