the only thing that equals how much I love XCOM's combat missions is how much I do not care about the base management and globe screen nonsensepic.twitter.com/V9g1HEYKla

Interesting! I think those are the things that set it apart from the others in the genre. In that case I think there are a ton of alternatives you might enjoy when the hunger strikes.
the problem is also that none of them have the aestheticpic.twitter.com/VvsZ29WqIa
as you might have gathered aesthetic is extremely important to me
True, there aren't that many with that budget but there is a very good one with mechs, which I know you like.pic.twitter.com/jZd7g6Id3V
into the breach is great i know not many can have the level of budget but I feel like the art direction doesn't tend towards that direction either, probably because then it would just be copying xcom...
Hmmm, in that case, I think the one that might get the closest is Phoenix Point, by the creator of the original XCOM.pic.twitter.com/E4E8QorgCI
very curious about this one. i'm always leery of breakaway-designer-guy stories though, like, why did he not keep working with a video game studio? what happened there?
I don't know his story in detail but there's a large gap between the original XCOM (1994) and Phoenix Point (2019), where he worked with several studios and eventually funded his own. Sounds pretty normal for someone with a hit, if you ask me.
He did do other games with similarities to XCOM during that time, so I'm guessing Phoenix Point was his way to finally make the game he'd been wanting to make for that long.
