I didn't know such a thing existed!

Oh, there's a whole world of these, I just had never dipped my toe in it. So far, so good. It runs a range of consoles, handheld and not, up to Playstation and some titles in later consoles.

I think something like this would suit me way more than a newer console. I'd love to go and replay some older favourites from my GBA or even PS1 days. I looked briefly, and they seem pretty affordable too!

I've been having a lot of fun either replaying games I had or trying games I used to read about in magazines that I never had a chance to play back then. The handheld ones are usually made so they can be played in short sessions, which suits me much better than AAA.

Absolutely! There's a load of SNES games I'd love to try, classics, that I've never played because we didn't have a SNES. Not to mention games that were never released outside Japan that now have fan translations (don't know much about that scene, just know it exists)

Have we chatted about emulation before? As in, do you think it's OK and in what circumstances? I know some folks hold the opinion that it's stealing in all circumstances (unless the content is original).

I don't think we have. The way I see it, if the developer/publisher isn't selling the game, then emulating makes as much sense or more than buying a second hand copy since the developers won't get anything either way.

And to be honest, in 10 years in the videogame industry I have never got any royalties for games I worked on so I wouldn't describe it as stealing. I'm glad that allows the game to hang around for longer than it would if the publishers were in charge.

Looks like we're basically at the same place! I'd never emulate a current generation game (if it's even possible), but unavailable, older games are alright, as far as I'm concerned.

That's pretty much it! For example, I wanted to play Metroid 2. I have a cartridge but the battery which saves has run out. Checked around to see if it was available on the 3DS Virtual Console and it was, for cheap, so I bought it. If not, I'd have emulated it without concern.
