I think it is! I'm probably not the best person to be answering because I'm a game designer so naturally I'd be biased towards gameplay.

I was surprised to see "Publisher" on the list, though. It's the least important factor in the formula for me. I don't think there is a publisher who perfectly aligns with my tastes. If it is known for bad production it's more likely to scare me away.

I was curious cause I saw some people really talk about this being critical for them!

There do seem to be people who are fans of a particular publisher. And this is not a new, KS phenomenon. I remember when Alea games were an auto-buy for many. I'm sure it helped that they only released 1-2 games per year and each box size was its own numbered series.

As a designer, I'm always interested to see what Friedemann comes up with, and he reserves most of his innovations for his own publishing company, 2F. But I don't buy any big games before playing them anymore (and even then, I rarely buy big games).

For sure, I always have designers I'm always up to try, but that doesn't mean I'll buy them sight unseen. Good point about Alea, I think games that are presented as "collections/series" get a bigger following just because of that, people want to complete them.

Same here. For example, I'll check out anything by Splotter or Francis Tresham but buying them is another step.

I still have yet to try a Splotter game! Haven't had a steady game group in years so complex games are few and far between.

Ah, know the feeling! It took me a long time to find my current club to play. Sadly, now the difficult part is not getting heavy games to the table but playing Cosmic Encounter. Can you believe it?

Ha, I can! When I was at a previous studio we started a Cosmic Encounter night which later evolved into a more general boardgame night.

This was mostly because this was their introduction to boardgames (and what a start!) and I wanted to show them many other aspects and mechanics of boardgames. Also didn't want them to burn out.

Yes, I once started a Boardgame group using War if the Ring! They were all Tolkien fans. But it didn’t take long to introduce other games.

I wonder if many other games seemed "too simple" after starting with War of the Ring. :D

Funny thing is, it has been much harder to teach Cosmic to entrenched gamers than to new ones.
