The daft thing is that proper, traditional British food is actually very good. The overcooked bland stuff only came in as a result of WW2 & post war rationing & shortages afterwards.
The related daft thing being that as a result of said industrialisation of food a lot of Brits these days also have very little idea what British cuisine is historically like. ;-)
Depends very much on your socioeconomic background here, IME. I grew up in a 'stretched middle' family, Mediterranean restaurants were an occasional luxury for my family, so I was familiar enough. More deprived kids could easily never have come across more than (terrible) pizza.
('Stretched middle' generally being: professional jobs but high bills and little spare cash.) The days of "not eating that foreign muck" were largely those of my grandparents *in my demo* and I'm 40. That said, I'm afraid I've still not come across much Portuguese food!
