There's definite a few accounts made on one day and used one day only just rate this one game 10. Typically these are friends of the makers lending a hand. This can't be stopped on BGG, but the system is usually self-policing. I will bring this instance up with admin later.

BGG does not allow spamming. I will see what Octavian has to say.

I've been through all the 10 ratings and the 9s, on this and related games. There was an official BGG contest during the KS promotion, so that's why there was some activity there. Plus the publishers seem to be very active demoing at events also, so the fan support seems genuine.

BGG has an algorithm to smooth out extremes when quantities are low, so big swings don't actually work. We can't see that there was any incentivising to generate 10 ratings. The skewing looks dramatic but Octavian says it's not actually affecting the averaged ratings.

The other games from the publisher have some 10s from a few accounts, but it really looks like enthusiasm from demo events. They are just good at marketing. Octavian will look some more but for now it seems legit.

Very interesting! It was the first time I saw a situation like this where there were a similar number of votes for every rating, probably more due to its external circumstances (crowdfunding, IP, nostalgia) than the quality of the game itself.

There are 7 accounts which were created on one day, rated it a 10, logged off and never returned. Which isn't great but not terrible. We've had small publishers get their family members to do that, but it's usually a lot more obvious. People do try to game the BGG system but...

...as above, the algorithm stops it from working. You need over 30 ratings for the average to appear, and it is designed to smooth extremes. Which means that games with a very high or low average are legitimately rated. You'd have to have a lot of genuine 10s to push it up.

Personally, any game with under 100 ratings, I would add a pinch of salt. Once you get a good volume of ratings, the very high and very low ratings have a much lower effect on the scheme of things.

It's fascinating that something like this case would happen organically. On first glance it almost seemed like a group effort but without any tangible benefit. Thank you for the insights!
