Unfortunately, Cones of Dunshire is how many real board games actually come across to players like me (interested but casually). Note that Ben isn’t trying to help Leslie understand his game, he’s bragging about how complex it is.
That's why I'm disappointed that they portrayed the hobby from that angle. I doubt anyone would be more likely to try a modern boardgame after watching it presented like this.

I was still willing to play them after I saw Cones of Dunshire! I just also felt really seen. I think a younger version of me wouldn’t have gotten that the joke was on Ben and would have wanted to play it.
