Manuel, I spent about 20 years trying to get people here (UK) to play anything but Monopoly. "Might as well stick to the ones they know." was the problem, not a minor spoof on a TV show. In order to play *any* new game, *several* people *have* to learn it. They don't want to.

I'm not saying this is the only reason people don't want to try new games. This is just adding to the media's depiction of boardgames which is overwhelmingly "look how boring they are".

Getting people to try anything new is always a challenge, but it's further stacked when all their references are of people having a terrible time with it.

That's Monopoly. It was designed by Lizzie Magie to be horrible. It's a politic exercise to educate people in the Georgist ideas of property taxes. You're supposed to play it twice, and be enlightened, but Charles Darrow stole the idea and chopped off the second half.
