I thought the Heists in GTA V were absolutely brilliant. They created a rich experience that beautifully merged their city simulation with crafted content. These guys love Heat, The Town, Oceans 11, and I felt that razor clearly in the game. 1/

Initially, your operations guy lays out two options. This is already a cool choice, as the two options come with a set of pre-requisite missions to set up the pieces, but also reflect different play styles. Execute the Heist as you want. 2/

Though I never really FELT the impact, it also lets you pick and hire your crew. And, if you complete side missions, your crew will be augmented by people you've met. I saved a getaway driver by chance and she joined my crew. Very cool. 3/

Many of the missions require you get specific vehicles, like a Firetruck to help with the ruse that you're firemen, or a police van to steal supplies from the LSPD. It was fun to explore the city to find the things you need. 4/

That latter point brought up something I thought was really cool: this is one of the first times I didn't mind the more miniscule, tiny missions. All of these pieces added to a really important whole, and seeing my efforts pay off in the big heist? Chef's kiss. 5/

Finally, the missions often ripped off movies (Ghost Protocol) or weren't afraid to do ridiculous stuff (Use a Chinook to grab a sub that stole an underwater prototype). The variety and hyperbolic nature was delightful. /end

Narratively, the way they had you swapping characters during the heist was a treat.
