Does anyone else have a board game secret? Mine is that I love hearing all those silly rules about who gets to be the first player. It's one of the first things I look for in the rulebook when learning a new game Do you hate them or love them like me?

I am not a fan. Played Azul in Portugal and the rule is "The player who most recently visited Portugal takes the starting player marker", made us all feel like it was not meant for Portuguese people.

That's an interesting way to look at it. I've always assumed those "last person to visit place" type ones are a nice nod to the roots or theme of the game. But I can see why it might feel exclusionary too

I think it's less egregious when it's very obviously a joke. Dinosaur Island's is: The player who most recently extracted DNA from a mosquito trapped in amber shall be the first player.

Does it have a "No, really, pick a random player" right after?

Looks like it adds another thematic condition which will be tricky if you're playing the game with your family (and visited the park together).pic.twitter.com/PF4OcfUC6f

I think it can be done well to evoke a theme and can also be useful to break the ice when demoing at an event but other than the first time I'm teaching I tend to ignore them.
