#BoardgameDesignProtip When licensing your game to a publisher under a royalty structure, negotiate for a non-refundable advance against your royalties payable upon signing. They now have skin in the game & you have a safety net if the game never goes to print. #IAmNotALawyer

Several games published, never had an advance. This is good advice, I should have pushed harder. I was too eager to get something out there.

I think it sets the tone as a joint venture from the start. Also, if a publisher decides not to go ahead several months later, you should have adequate consideration for time lost and time spent on that game. Just getting your rights back plus development isn’t fair compensation.

I agree and it will be on my mind the next time I have one of those conversations.
