Question for my designer friends: I'm considering making a new prototype and wondering if it's worth making the whole thing IN Tabletop Simulator so it can be edited during the session when necessary. Is there a strong reason not to do this?

Over the last year I have hardly done any work with physical prototypes and have used a combination of TTS, Tabletopia and Screentop. I think you just have to be aware of the differences with physical. For instance, infinite bags are sadly not a thing IRL.

I'm finding that in particular I have a workflow with Google Sheets, nanDECK, and Screentop that means I can have a first prototype for a small card game in minutes, so in a lot of cases it's not worth bothering with a physical version.

I wasn't aware of Screentop yet! One tricky thing this game needs that most platforms don't support is the ability to write something that will be placed face down until the time is right.

Yeah, any of these platforms are more suited to some types of games than others. One issue I've not seen a good way around is the ability to peek at face-down components. I think Vassal does that, but the others not so much. (Wouldn't be surprised if there was a TTS trick.)

Yep, TTS allows you to peek at face down cards.

Awesome. I shall look for the trick! 🙂

"ALT + SHIFT: While holding ALT to zoom, press SHIFT and you will see the backside of the card. This is called Peek. This is good for seeing the bottom of a deck, the back of a card while its hidden, etc. Others can see you are peeking, so there is no cheating involved."
