Naturally, when things are more stable I'd start looking at making better looking layouts externally. This is for the first steps when I know surprises will come up.

The main thing that stops me doing this is not having spent the time to work out how to create stuff in Tabletop Simulator...
-
(That said, my early prototypes are all pencil on paper for that reason, but also I tend to only use those for solo testing. By the time I'm trying a thing with other people I'm typically mostly interested in complete plays unless something seriously dramatic goes wrong.)

Over the last year I have hardly done any work with physical prototypes and have used a combination of TTS, Tabletopia and Screentop. I think you just have to be aware of the differences with physical. For instance, infinite bags are sadly not a thing IRL.
-
I'm finding that in particular I have a workflow with Google Sheets, nanDECK, and Screentop that means I can have a first prototype for a small card game in minutes, so in a lot of cases it's not worth bothering with a physical version.

I've done this, and while I do not *enjoy* playing games in TTS, the workflow and speed of iteration is very good. I've talked myself out of making some changes and some entire games by putting it into TTS and poking around, either with others or alone.
-
That's exactly where I'm at. At the moment I need a way to playtest with others, which is still not safe to do it in person.

A great person once said "If it works it ain't stupid." I usually roll with that.
