Yakuza Zero is such a strange experience. At 11+ hours in, I feel like the game mechanisms are more akin to running errands for people in Animal Crossing. Tonally it is dark, somewhat problematic, silly. The combat turns from button mash to precision required on a dime.

The UX is criminally dated. It is ugly and feels like a time capsule. 99% of the quests are: 1. Convo, with dialog that doesn’t affect outcome. 2. Some form of quiz. 3. I violently bludgeon somebody (no matter the subject).

All this being said - it is fun. I don’t quite know why, but I spent 80 hours in Animal Crossing. I can’t help but feel a game about helping people in a limited open space, that isn’t absurdly violent, and has a core mechanism that isn’t murdering people, could sell a LOT.

Agreed! By far my favorite part is the side quests. They're silly, funny and tell me a bit about Japan in the 80's. The localization is very well done. It feels a bit like tourism, which is very welcome after a year in lockdown. I'd love to explore other countries like this.

They're the main thing that keeps me going. I never know who I'm going to come across but it makes it feel like everyone is worth helping, which is a welcome moral I did not expect from this setting.

I’ve helped a statue, multiple couples, I helped a guy cross a bridge in his jacket because he kept getting beat up, saved a girl from a cult. It is so wildly varied and bizarre. Helped a dad in disguise hang with his child.

Done all of those, so good. :D I think when I got to training a dominatrix I finally realized what kind of game this is!
