I find it interesting to think about a game concept that takes the premise of #Pokémon (you battle, collect and evolve different monsters) and combines it with a way less linear gameplay and world. What systems would need to change to keep it fun?

To me, the combat! I love the collection aspect but the combat gets repetitive very quickly. If you're fighting in the open there could be surprises like other trainers, wild pokemon or weather effects which you'd have to deal with.

Yes! I'm also thinking about level scaling systems a lot. A true open world would let you go anywhere (unlike the
#Pokémon games, which gate your way until you beat the current gym). I currently think that battles could probably be way more optional as well.1 reply 0 retweets 1 like -

It would also allow you to avoid competing directly with Pokémon, so win/win!

For sure! I’d love to explore some non-combat approaches to leveling and evolving monsters. Maybe some can’t even level by fighting, but by other means. Interested in what this could be.

And yes
@DareLooks I’ll play some#Undertale for reference. My favorite part of all of this is that I’m going back to a lot of classic games to learn more about their UI and design. By recommendation of@SlimeKingGames I ordered a new screen for my GBA and will mod it soon

A backlit GBA is such a joy! If you're taking inspiration from Elder Scrolls, you can use their concept of levelling things you do a lot. Ex: a flying monster needs to fly in order to progress.

This idea excites me more than it should
I was also wondering if I should introduce a trainer level which acts as a baseline for potential level scaling systems.0 replies 0 retweets 1 likeThanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo
