It's sad to see the last competitive LCG go. It has It's issues but is still a much friendlier business model for competitive the players than chasing rares on random boosters.

I don't imagine any competitive card game is doing super well during a pandemic but I hope the publishers see that the only way to keep their community going is by having a way for them to play online.

Magic had it's best financial year ever in 2020, with growth in both physical and digital. The 2021 core set was the strongest seller ever.

To your larger point, I think the digital supports the physical. When I can play digitally I get excited about the game and am happy to invest in the physical for the future.

I think they'd do even better if they did it like the Pokémon card game, where every physical product comes with a code to redeem it online.

Definitely agree. Though it looks like Pokemon boosters give you a booster pack not the specific card. My ideal would be like Warhammer Champions. Each individual card is scanned and you get a copy, so you can play with your physical collection online and vice versa

Yes, for Pokémon you get codes for random boosters, it's very unlikely their contents will match. And you can't buy boosters on the app. Not sure of the logistics or how well it worked for Warhammer Champions. Sounds promising!

The border of every card had visible pips, and you could scan with the phone app. Could scan 8-10 at a time, and could also de-link the card from your account to sell

That sounds great, and that is a very clever way to integrate the pips into the card's layout.

You can see them here, not too intrusive. Catch is it’s a 1 way ticket and you could earn digital cards so play shifted to digital and now they don’t bother with physical :(pic.twitter.com/2wBnfTs6IO

Oh yeah, if they started breaking that connection with digital-only rewards I can see how it got to that point.
