Every article on how to evaluate magic cards for constructed seems to say “compare to old cards that were good or bad!”. Make statements with little explanation “4/4 for 4 mana isn’t good” ok why tho. Finding my footing as a newbie is tricky

Haven't played in over a decade but the answer to that last one is that for that same cost you could get better creatures, even a 4/4 with a useful ability.

“For the same cost there is better” doesn’t really help learn how to know what or why something is better. 4/4 with an ability is clearly better than the blank 4/4 but when you’re looking at more complex cards, or even just flipping through your collection starting is hard

E.g I landed on this card cuz it seems cool and I had just played some goblin spam decks, so I built around it. But is it good? It seems good, but half the time a card seems good to me I Google it and the consensus is like “fine in limited trash in constructed”pic.twitter.com/gdPZtnTP34

It doesn't help that they're so situational based on what deck you're playing. To me it looks good if your deck is geared towards drawing and playing many smaller/cheaper creatures. The catch is that the two different mana are harder to come by than just one.

Yeah foe sure. There are lots of good articles on evaluating for Limited and what you’re looking for and why, for constructed it’s much harder to find card evaluation help

Oh yeah, I see how the different formats (and rotations!) can confuse the communication around it. Good luck!
