Which questions do you find yourself checking the rule book for the most? Mine is 'how many cards do we start with?' I can never remember in any game I play!

This is most games! Why do they all have different starting hands??

I played around with four card hands for Artichokes, but it felt weird. I feel like five cards is a pretty "typical" starting hand size.

Superhot the Card Game uses four. I only ever remember because there are eight marked starter cards, and it still feels a bit weird

Oh! Sorry. :) There's a few reasons for that. We wanted a sense of urgency/scarcity. Game length, since there is a game over condition where your hand fills up with bullets. And new cards go into your hand instead of the discard so you can fight your way to bigger hands.

Oh no I wasn't having a go at games designers - I get there are reasons behind all the decisions including hand size. I was just being flippant - like wouldn't it be easier if all games were exactly the same?!!

No problem, that's not how I had interpreted it! I just miss talking about game design. :)
