Anything from The Watch series. Guards, Guards is a fun one and also an intro to the characters. Night Watch is excellent. Monstrous Regiment is about a woman who dresses as a man to get into the army and has a lot to say about sexism and the sometimes absurd nature of war

Seconded! I'm finishing "Guards! Guards!" now and I wish I had started here.

I started with Small Gods :). His very early stuff is not so good, unfortunately. He really only got better and better as time went on, and Snuff really showed the peak of his impatience for societal inequality. It felt like he just had enough.

Also I'm incredibly jealous that monique will get to read him for the first time! (it's ok if you don't like it too don't worry no pressure lmao)

I think the people I have great respect for hold his work in high regard. That and all the quotes, I need to know more.

I think Dee is right, I'd start with Guards Guards, especially if the social commentary is your "in". The Rincewind books tend to satirize fantasy tropes and the like, I think they're the least "essential" in a way

I can't get into the Rincewind ones at all lol. I just reread the Watch, and Death ones over and over

I started from the Rincewind novels and thought they started poorly, and then went into some unfortunate caricature of real world cultures in "Interesting Times" and "The Last Continent". Instead of giving up I checked The Watch and it's so much better.

you two should give the Witches a try. They look at fairy tales like Rincewind looks at fantasy, but are much better, MUCH better IIRC. They gave me my first inklings of feminism, way back in the day

Yup I've read those but don't like them nearly as much as the Watch. I just like Ankh Morpork stories tbh.

Oh, I eventually want to get there but I have found it hard to make time for reading while in quarantine. Turns out I mostly read during my commute, which I no longer have.
