This was standard in Portugal. No contract too so you could be fired without warning. Combined with crunch, I ended up being sick for months in a row.https://twitter.com/humanworkplace/status/1350960214128943106 …

It's extremely exploitative but there is a silver lining: You could also quit without warning.

It's terrible, right? Ended up doing it for almost two years, that's how long the game took.

A lesson I have learnt in life is to never be afraid to walk out of a job that's become shit or is treating you like shit. My current job once sent (PO actually drove 100km) me home because I came in sick and didn't understand why I was very worried about this.

Previously, I'd worked at places (gamedev, startups, even somewhat in academia) where the peer pressure or culture was to come in regardless and extreme crunch was enforced on occasion.

Luckily my last two jobs have been very good.

I'm glad to hear! I feel similarly now but at the time it was my first job in gamedev in a country that didn't have an industry. There was only one other studio I could be at and they weren't hiring. I jumped ship after that project was finished.
