Paying more attention than usual to D&D forums reminds me of how many people enjoy the close detail of tactical combat. I simply cannot be arsed with that at all. I just narrate and run the stats and keep the pace going.

Just looking at rulebooks, my interest in the game is inversely proportional to the amount of detail in the combat section.

Yeah I went down this rabbit hole bc I suddenly realised I'd been playing bonus actions wrong, as in not at all, and my realisation was that as long as it's fun I don't actually give a toss

I agree, to me it should be about collaborative storytelling. Anything beyond that is optional and often the rulebooks suggest that as well.

Yeah it's interesting how I don't tend to get on with storytelling games yet I play crunchy games for the story. Almost like I can't fire the imagination without quite a big scaffold to support it

When playing a boardgame I'm expecting a different structure and pauses to check the rules. In RPGs it flows differently and that combat minutia usually results in grinding the game to a halt.
