Every so often I feel like playing a competitive game, check the local scene and find the same games. Sure, a couple new games come and go but the mainstays are always the same: CCGs and miniature skirmish games.

No, but I have burnt out on Magic's business model and community.

Understandable. Flesh and Blood is getting a lot of buzz lately and is an excellent design IMO. It also supports multiplayer. Might be what you are looking for.

If you read the thread, the main issue is still the lack of a group where I could play regularly. :)

I see, I misunderstood then! :) Doesn't a competitive board game like say Blood Rage scratch this itch then?

Not at all, I think what I miss is how the game changes over time and discovering it as a community. Maybe a Legacy game or Oath could stratch that itch but they would also need a group.

Ok, I guess you want the CCG experience without the spikes? That's a tough one.

Yeah. Keyforge really felt designed for that but they still took over.

Yeah, teams buying 200+ decks and sharing the best ones just got around the Anti-Spike design.

Epic Card Game had a great take on the business model but a terrible rulebook and it was hard to get people to play. The ones who would care about a Magic-like game were already playing it.

Yeah, I think the non-ccg games will never really hit it big like the CCG ones. The incentives for retailers to support them are just not there and player retention gets really hard when there isn't large scale competitive play.

I would love to see a game that proves me wrong but I am not optimistic.
