Looking for a traditional roguelike (turn based, procedurally generated map, permadeath) for the Switch, checked out 100+ suggestions, only 2 matched. I now understand why some people are very fussy about the term.

Many of my favorite games are inspired by Rogue in some way but this time I wanted to check something closer to the source and the language around it is so muddy. It's "doom clone" all over again.

Turns out that most of the popular roguelikes are "roguelites" because they only borrow some of the aspects of what defines a roguelike but the terms are so similar, no wonder people get confused.

I've been trying a few of the suggestions and here's what I think:

Yōdanji (Switch) Simple charming game where you are a yōkai. The hook for me is unlocking the other playable characters. Might look underwhelming but I'm glad I gave this a shot.pic.twitter.com/2qOOEoMH96

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX Demo (Switch) I had a great time with this one. Lovely presentation and music, I'd like to play more of it. This looks like an easy-going introduction to the mystery dungeon series. I'm just worried that it might be too easy for me.pic.twitter.com/SMdXWf0eZN

Dungeons of Dredmor (PC) Another nice introduction to roguelikes, it's easy to get into and has a goofy sense of humor. Unfortunately it's not well suited for a 4k monitor, everything looks either tiny or blurry.pic.twitter.com/x3jR4PB3l4

Pixel Dungeon (Android) Streamlined gameplay, nice interface, plays quickly. Has multiple characters and achievements to go after. I'm sure I'll play this the next time I have to go on a long trip.pic.twitter.com/88B3suKDnn

Tangledeep (Switch) I liked what I played but it felt too easy, at least at the start. My first run took 7 hours! It has a ton of features, feels like they must have added a few with each update but it is overwhelming for new players.pic.twitter.com/ngMiMlp3gm

After bad joycon drift I feel uneasy about using the analogs on the Switch so next I'll explore the mystery dungeon series on my trusty DSi! I've been exploring the library on the DS for 14 years and there's still so much to see.

Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer (DS) I am really impressed with this game. It has the right level of complexity, good onboarding and controls. Pleasant presentation and setting (not generic fantasy!). It's a joy to discover.pic.twitter.com/GJpQEnutKA

I love what it does with the side quests and characters that advance from run to run (much like in Hades). Took me a while to get that the way to progress is to loop back repeatedly to upgrade your weapons so when you eventually die it can set you back several hours. :(
