Many of my friends find their parents have been manipulated by cult tactics on social media and alternative news sources to become highly polarised and iconoclastic. We need to arm them with compassion, critial thinking and learning on how manipulation tactics are deployed online

Just heard a Jordan Harbinger podcast on fake accounts manipulating public opinion and creating tensions. It's insane! After that I started checking out accounts that were RTed making terrible inflammatory statements. And there you go, most of them looked super-fake

Yeah, it takes so much time and effort to debunk them and it never ends because while you're doing that they continue spreading more lies.

I agree, and it shouldn't stop there. I am worried about the algorithms for measuring "success" on social media and youtube actually promoting controversy instead.

It's human weakness vs recommendation engines, data mining and pursuit of profit above human rights. Any thoughts on how to counter this stuff other? Use open source platforms? Use VPNs? How do you undermine the effectiveness of such tech in the short term? Take digital holidays?

I don't have a good answer other than not giving them the attention they need to thrive. I'm still here though, but I've had a much better experience than in other platforms.
