That is sad and strange to me. I cannot imagine that would improve their chances at all. Did their work actually get more recognition because of it?

France is 3rd animation producer in the world. Mainly kids shows. The usual setup is not a french neighborhood, it has to look like an American suburb because this is admittedly the most recognizable background for many people around the globe

See, that's interesting. Because Japan, as far as I can tell, sets most of their stories in Japan and seems to succeed at it. And I personally have no issue seeing a foreign neighborhood (I love it, of course!). Hence, "strange to me".

I'm just stating some facts, I generally love to see different cultures and stories from abroad. But Rami is right, the weight of america in every western people is strong. And in business, even more so since Americans are profoundly spending more than any other

Of course... there's no denying America's influence! And I can understand the frustration.

To add to that... as an Asian American, I hardly saw myself in American media growing up. And it's not that much better now! I think Asian Americans still have to rely a lot on Asian media to see themselves physically represented. So yeah, it's a familiar problem to me.

Derek, with all respect, these are two different things. Yes, absolutely, representation of Asian-Americans is abysmal, but we're talking here about the utter overwhelming & erasure of local domestic cultures by the US, and the lack of global opportunity for those outside the US.

Your culture being consumed by US expectations and framing and distribution and issues and economy is if you're lucky. If you're unlucky, you're watching Friends drinking Coca Cola at a McDonalds when the sanctions or invasion start. There'll still be a US movie on TV tomorrow.

It's just... I wish I could properly communicate how it feels, man. It's fucking exhausting seeing this continuing, accelerating, structural destruction of variety and diversity beyond diversity that exists in the US. I worry sometimes it's too late to change it anymore.

You're doing a great job given the medium - I'm definitely sensing the exhaustion. To me, what you're describing sounds like one of the challenges of becoming increasingly connected. It's a massive topic and I don't want to tire you out further!

The increasing connectivity amplifies it but it's something I've felt all my life, even before the internet. Just look at the Oscar categories. There's "Best picture" for the USA and "Best International film", for everyone else.
