Its interesting being having been in playtest groups and, now, having my game playtested. I was in the playtest for a well-known designer and id say 33%-50% of the testers found the central mechanism hard to keep track of and wasnt fun.

The designer ignored it all and pushed forward. Seems to have sold well, though already forgotten. In my playtesting, ive not asked "did you have fun" since the playtesters are indiscriminately chosen with no sense of their preferred genres. Maybe I should?

I wouldn't ask "did you have fun" because it's such a nebulous definition and because they know you so it's unlikely they'll say "no". Knowing what types and complexity of games they like is important though, because it lets you know if there's even a chance of them liking yours.

it is nebulous. Though wouldnt it be nice to ask and get a 100% "This was amazing!" response :D

Absolutely, but I don't want to count on it. I'd rather be surprised when it happens than disappointed when it doesn't. :)
