What is the benefit of getting a publisher as an indie dev in video games? It sounds like it’s better to do the whole thing without one and self-publish?

If you have a finished game, a publisher would take care of the marketing. That's kinda the main one. Most good publishers take the hit and pay for it. Really bad ones make you recoup it. The trick is finding a publisher who believes in your game so as to take financial risks

They do other stuff too like pay for loc, pay for external QA, but in most cases they overcharge as a way to make sure they're taking less risk. In some cases they part fund development but that's rare and would normally be fully recouped

This sounds terrible. There are a lot of bad contracts by the sounds of things. In most cases it sounds like you’re better being the publisher than the dev. Something’s got to change there!!

The main thing that needs to change imho is developers need a place they can warn each other about publishers anonymously without getting in trouble. Right now, it's not a good idea to speak out on specific companies publicly.

That would be a positive thing for indies. There are similar things on the board game side too. There’s got to be a way to safeguard an indie from a bad deal!

There are? I'd love to know, I have some people to warn about.

Some companies I can’t talk about for similar reasons and others are more American based companies so I’m not aware of them all!!

gosh. well if there was some place like this for developers to anonymously report back on how a publisher's shafted them, people need to know :) could save a lot of people's health and careers

There isn’t! I’m just in board game groups where people have posted about problems their having with publishers. There’s not a dedicated group for it. It’s just something that has been echoed!

I see. I haven't been too vocal about this to avoid burning bridges but there are definitely publishers I won't work with again.

I think it’s definitely harder in video games with the type of agreements you enter into and how publishers treat indie devs in that space, most likely the same in animation too.
