So you do a thing, that many acknowledge or associate with low esteem or self image - lets say "self deprecation"; but you instead see it as a wry, even coy thing to do. For the art of good self deprecation is doing it so others are denied the ability to criticise you.

And I wonder is the first thing the more true - after all it's a dodging tactic - but is it true that you do it mostly because of your state? Or is that wrong, because you do it due to culture, or perhaps due to a personal taste for the amusement of layering things obliquely.

Or you do it because it's good to not push others to any discomfort, because it's bad to overbear. And now it seems very far away from low self esteem. It's almost an excess of self esteem - trimmed back a tad. And it can be all things, at various layers, from the same person.

I think context is crucial. Laughing at yourself after making a mistake can work wonders to dispel any awkwardness. Insulting yourself unprompted can feel like fishing for compliments.

Yeah, it's weird when it's obvious (seeking validation through self put downs).

Now that I think of it, self deprecation is key to one of my favorite tv shows (Nathan for You). It presents people in weird situations but then the host is always the butt of the joke so they don't end up looking so bad.

I've not watched it? Is it good? Yeah, it's almost sounds thoughtful right? (assuming it's not manipulative)

I really like it, it shows interesting and genuine sides of humanity that I don't see on TV. The host is manipulative, part of the appeal is to see how far his ideas will go but I don't think the show is, due to that approach. Here's an example:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6LpXiCXD0hw …
