I tried to rush it through to the end (no particular gear, just trying to tackling the beasts one after the other) and it felt very lackluster and empty. The game seems to be all about getting lost, unfortunately.

It feels like I'm the only person in the world that doesn't like it. It's a good open world game but it doesn't have what I expect from a Zelda game, which is progression. You get all the toys at the start and the progress is marginal.

I think it does have progression, just a different sort. Instead of having the entire map and having areas that are item-gated, you have all the items and you need to manually explore the map. A huge change for Zelda, and I definitely enjoyed it, but I get why folks wouldn't.

That's a measure of progress but having everything from the start makes it too repetitive for me. I do like the traversal, but little else. Maybe if had a ton of free time I would have enjoyed it, or if it had a different IP (and expectations).

The last Zelda game I finished was A Link Between Worlds, and honestly I thought it was downright refreshing to have the freedom to do what I wanted. I suspect the positive reception it received led to BotW's level of freedom, but I'm sure many people feel the same as you, too.

That's also the last one I played, earlier this year. I liked it well enough, it shook things while being very recognizable (almost to a fault because the map is pretty much the same as ALLTP).

Definitely engineered to take folks on a nostalgia trip, that's for sure!
