This left me wondering about the term in the context of games. At the moment when I see a game just being described as "a battle royale" I have no idea what the gameplay will be like.

Judging by PUBG and Fortnite it seemed to mean "team-based shooter where you have to scavenge for gear, take other players out and stay in the diminishing circle until you're the last team standing" but then Tetris 99 appeared and proudly declared itself one as well.

Instead of a design evolution by iteration it feels like this was lead by marketing. Since battle royales were so popular, it was a way to get people's attention.

Now it has been distilled to mean "last one standing", which doesn't tell me anything about how it plays. I guess what I'm saying is that "battle royale" is a game mode, not a genre. Like "coop" or "permadeath".

...or maybe I'm just a silly foreigner who wasn't familiar with the original term. Anyway, time to work! :D

isn't Battle Royale term comes from Koushun Takami's book Battle Royale?

That's the first time I heard it but it seems to have been around for much longer:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_royal …

It has, but I'm pretty certain the video game setup was directly inspired by the movie, which was an adaptation of the novel. (I tend to think it's too intrinsic to be a mode, but not specific enough to be a genre - somewhere in between.)

Prior to the movie, at least, it was commonly understood to just mean "large free-for-all", at least where I grew up. So: no teams, individual score/win/whatever, more participants than usual for that particular kind of contest.
