My answer: Tricky question. When I was in Portugal there were rarely any translations or portuguese editions, so there was no choice but to get them in English.

If it's a game to play with my family I try to get it in Portuguese. For Codenames I sold the base one and got Pictures because it's language independent. Now I'm living abroad and I get them in English.

I've found that at least in Portugal, people who were already into games were comfortable with English which made this easy, I guess. Some people made/downloaded translations which they could cut and sleeve alongside the components, but that was rare.

I do speak a couple of languages but English is my most proficient. I might try Arabic or French board games but no point seeking those out here in the U.K.

How common are Arabic games or translations to Arabic? I don't think I've seen many but I hope they're not rare.

My first language is English but I live in France, kid are completely bilingual. I try and buy games in Fr if they're for playing with others but if they're not text heavy, I can get away with Eng. Solo or just with the kids: Both but definitely Eng if it's narrative driven.

I know there is a big market for games in France, glad to hear it's accessible for locals too.

Honestly, with the quality of Dutch translations we go for English versions. The two exceptions are if the Dutch version is a lot cheaper or the people we have in mind to play it with aren't proficient enough in English.

Good point! This is the main reason I stopped playing Netrunner. I had to move to Germany and the community used German cards because they were so much cheaper. No way I would be able to memorize all the cards or get proficient quickly enough to continue following the game.
