Boardgame designers - do you ever finish a game and then just do nothing with it because it has no market viability?

Or I let a publisher do it for me when they give me a contract, keep the game for 2 years, and then send it back. I did get to keep the advance, which was more than I ever made from Tulipmania (where JLKM went bankrupt before sending any royalties).

Aha! You've skipped a step - you at least managed to convince a publisher it has market viability! I asked because I wondered if there are commonalities between games that can't get a release and if there is really an audience for some.

Games for very specific player counts seems to be one of those common aspects.

Yes, and mechanics that are not as popular nowadays such as player elimination.

I have a couple of games that can only really be played once. I thought that was a death knell, but the popularity of the Exit games etc. leaves me wondering.

Yes, it feels like players are more accepting of those nowadays. Escape rooms, T.I.M.E. Stories, even the return of Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective.
