It's kinda disappointing how modern technology makes low budget average movies look worse than previous eras because it makes them look "better". The cheapness is more clearly visible now. Hellraiser would probably look pants if it was made today.
The lack of grain even removed some of the mystery and tension from more recent movies like Prometheus. Super clear picture, nothing moving in the shadows.

Yeah, agreed 100%. But at least Prometheus looks filmic. There's clearly a calibre and budget behind it. The world of low budget VHS movies being somewhat entertaining and interesting because their faults were hidden, or an artificial atmosphere was added, is gone now, though
