Yes! Also, other wars.

i personally think fake wars in a fantasy/scifi setting are fine

but understand also if people want to avoid wars generally. they're kind of heavy

I agree fictional wars are definitely not as bad but I wouldn't say they're heavy either, and that's the issue. They trivialize and normalize something which is (or should be) terrible.

Oh Advance Wars. The amount of battles that are framed as Commander A fighting Command B... for old times sake!? It's completely head in hands stuff. It's the same in Wargroove. Light-hearted kid friendly war is weird. Still amazingly fun games though...

I enjoy both of those games/series, but less for the war and more for the advance and the groove parts.

Absolutely, they're well designed and fun to play but I'm always left with a sore taste due to their handling of the theme.

Here’s a question - if the exact same systems were used but framed in something less warlike, what would that look like? I don’t even want to start on commercial viability? I want to talk about a cool turn based tactical game that’s not about war. But what *is* it about?

I think for Advance Wars I'd have to think of each mission type differently. Taking over buildings could be finding and rescuing people. Fog of war could be about cartography, where you want to reveal and complete the map before the other.

I think even just removing the captains and giving the units focus and personality does wonders for Fire Emblem.

Scientists racing and pushing each other to catalog the map's wildlife. In some cases a photo would do, Some can just take photos, others require investigating over multiple turns.
