The devaluation of Art is a constant within our society, people want the bigger numbers, the better performance, not realizing the amount of work and thought that went into something as invisible as 'how wide is the screen you're reading this on'

If aesthetics didn't matter, games would ship in a featureless grey box. And some curmudgeon is sure to say 'GOOD! AND LOWER THE PRICE WHILE YOU'RE AT IT' - because at the core of it they don't care about other people.

the entire argument is 'it works for me, why change it?' ignoring of course that we live in a society where game publishers have to make money somehow

sure niche products and (and should!!) exist, but they will remain, as efka pointed out, niche, unless they broaden their appeal. (I'm not even saying they SHOULD broaden their appeal if they don't want to, but they have to aware that doing so is a *conscious* choice)

Before procrastinating on twitter I was writing a radio comedy about a board game FLGS. I am fully aware that my audience for this show will never be superhero film level. I'm making it anyway, because I care about the concept and I like doing it and I hope other people will too.

so I'm making a niche product. Sure. But I have to be aware that the aesthetics of the show are important. The logo has to be nice. The recording quality has to be decent. The script has to be polished.

I could record it all on my phone and post it as raw Wav files online, because that would be the 'purest' form of the show, but who is that helping?

back to games: 'Aesthetics don't matter, playability matters' is a statement at odds with itself. Graphic design. Layout. Kerning. Font choice. These are all aesthetic AND playability.

In theory, this is a usable player board. It's relatively clear, the icons are large, it looks alright I guess. Anyone who's played the game and knocked the table standing up?pic.twitter.com/S7XsDv2Mj2

Replying to @ithayla
I'm always weary of this solution for tracking, exponentially so if you're tracking more than one thing. So vulnerable to common things like bumping the table or even a sneeze!

When players start making board overlays to keep things in place that's a BIG red flag.
