Question: why is the default microcard game designs usually 18 cards? Is 18 an optimal math/probability solution for design, or was it arbitrarily agreed upon at one point & now just adopted?

I wonder if it all started with Love Letter? That was 18 cards, I think. Originally designed for an annual Tokyo Game Market challenge to design a game that could sell for ¥500 as far as I know.

It's based on the number of cards that come on a sheet from a printer. A normal sheet can make 3x 18 card games.

Yeah, but why 18? Why not 27, get 2 games? Or 9 cards and get 6 games?

It happens. That's why I've made Judean Hammer with 26 cards. And Movable Type had 110 cards because that was 2 sheets (different printer squeezed 55 on a sheet). I'd say most games have card quantities that fit these kind of criteria.

And it also explains why sometimes you get cards with ads for the publisher's other games.
