I don't understand platforming puzzles in FPS games, like, AT ALL. It's like introducing limited ammo for Mario's fireballs. Or interrupting a standard Tetris game every 2 minutes with a round of Space Invaders. It just gets in the way of what players are trying to enjoy!

I mostly agree but there are a few rare ones that pull it off, like Titanfall 2.

TF2 works b/c it's an extension of their core mechanism. You're just doing what you normally do, so it's a twist on something already proven and fun, not a supplemental, second experience.

Agh! Ironically, I'd actually intended to retweet Calvin with this (I'd deleted it the first time to catch a typo), which was the inspiration for the tweet and is about his frustration with...Titanfall 2!https://twitter.com/ithayla/status/1275512509349244928?s=20 …

playing the titan fall 2 campaign right now and struck by how good the gun fights are vs how pace destroyingly awful the movement puzzles are. doom already did this to me this year apparently it's just the Thing first person shooters do now.

Ahah oops! I stand my ground. In Titanfall it seems part of the core design while in Doom to me it feels like they tacked on to avoid looking like more of the same.

Also, the last level in TF2 is pure video game joy. They give you the auto-target pistol with super simple parkour wall running. You feel like Jesus and it's the best.

It's so good. That's a pistol that was unbalanced and beloved in Titanfall 1 and I kept an eye out for it. It is so sweet, you can feel the developers going "Go on, you deserve it!"

Big emotional pay off followed by god mode. It reminded me of Crackdown on the 360 (the first one), which had stupidly satisfying physical, visceral moments of pure video game joy.
