Games evolve in an iterative way, by improving what came before and by trying new combinations. Being familiar with game mechanisms makes it easier to learn new games but those shortcuts might be misleading if the game is trying something new.

So in order to learn the game you will have to unlearn parts of others. For example the game Epic is a standalone version of something like Magic: The Gathering which tries to fix some of its problems.

If you know Magic it can seem easier to get into, but it's the opposite. The changes affect its core and a lot of the assumptions you make while playing are wrong. The strategies don't work. You have to unlearn large parts of Magic in order to play Epic.
