There are a ton of games being released nowadays and it's hard to stand out. You don't get a lot of time to catch people's attention. Can you explain your game in a tweet? Does your game fit in a gif? :)

How much should you innovate? It's tempting for designers to strive for something completely original, but if players don't understand what they're looking, why would they stick around? Sometimes it's enough to combine things in a new way.

There is value in familiarity. Some of my favorite games were bold, original and misunderstood. People didn't know how to describe them, shopkeepers didn't understand which section they should go in.

Firaxis have this approach on their Civilization games: "Meier had adapted an approach for each new title so that it contains a third of existing features, another third that are improvements from the previous game, and the remaining third as introducing new features."

And the last tip is: think twice about adding every new idea to your project. It might sound great but does it make sense for this game? Maybe you can save it for the next one. Personally I'd rather play a game that does one thing well than one that does five half-baked things.

Good advice! The only thing I would add is to pick the photos on the sellsheet so that you can teach the game using them. It removes a lot of friction and time from the pitch meetings. :)
