Maltese is essentially a Semitic language, in the same family as Arabic, Hebrew, etc. It's mainly influenced by Tunisian Arabic, Sicilian and Italian, and English, with a smattering of loan words from other languages. Maltese culture is a mixture of North African and Italian :)
